San Miguel is located in the heart of south-side Tucson and on the site of Santa Monica Parish, a poor but thriving faith community. The neighborhood is predominantly Hispanic with two Native American nations, immediately to the south (Tohono O’odham) and to the east (Pascua Yaqui). The neighborhood is the poorest in the city and suffers from the typical problems of poverty: violence, drug abuse, physical abuse, ignorance, and lack of opportunity. Approximately 60% of Hispanics and 90% of Native American students drop out of school before high school graduation.
In addition to their normal course of college preparatory study, students work one day a week at a business. This generates salary to offset tuition and gives students valuable experience for the world beyond school. The other four classroom days are extended, enabling students to keep pace with their peers in other schools. Cooperating businesses include local newspapers and hospitals, and the University of Arizona.
San Miguel offers a way out of poverty. Building on Christ-centered relationship that include each student, the school provides a college preparatory academic program and a corporate internship experience that builds social confidence and workplace skills.
