Personal Story
The 70 years of my life have centered around New York City save for a few in college in DC and years of training for the De La Salle Christian Brothers in Barrytown NY. I grew up in Brooklyn NY near my beloved Ebbets Field home of the famous Brooklyn Dodgers. After college and training I was sent to teach junior high school science in the Morrisania section of the South Bronx and have worked with families of that challenged community for the past 40 years. Most of that time were in positions of leadership in Junior High School, a college for adults returning to school and a community agency committed to breaking the cycle of poverty for residents of Highbridge.
For me, leadership is a process whereby collaborators influence each other to bring about significant change in society or an organization. For De La Salle Christian communities this influence relationship grows among the Volunteer and Brother members causing the group to be very influential in any school or agency.
For many years I have observed in communities and neighborhoods of the Bronx what Margaret Meade meant by: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
