Discernment: Relax & Find the Right Choices

Reflecting on the March 2010 West Coast Discernment Retreat

by 08-10 LV Kevin Kuczynski

The 2010 West Coast Discernment Retreat was the second year for the retreat — and my second as an LV serving at The LEO Center in Oakland, CA.

This year turned out to be more helpful and formative than the last in part because at this time last year I already knew I would be returning to the program, so I still had many questions and concerns about transitioning into my second year. I used the time to reflect and ask for God's guidance.

But this year, I knew it would be time to move on as a Lasallian Volunteer and prepare for the transition to graduate school. At the reatreat, I was discerning between two universities in completely different parts of the country. Either one will be a huge adjustment for me, and this weekend gave me time to relax and think through all of my issues in calm and peace.

The Discernment Retreat also offered the wonderful chance to see a lot of my friends, such as fellow LVs, staff members, and quite a few Christian Brothers. I was able to sit down and hear where everyone is in their lives, and also able to build upon these valuable relationships.

Discerning is not just about making a transition from volunteer life into the real world. From talking with the staff I learned that, in their own way, they are also discerning aspects of their lives as well. Discernment is about taking some time to relax and be with God, preferably with some great friends. It is about living and finding the right choices in life that fulfill your goals. That is why the West Coast Discernment Retreat was so important to me and why it will continue on into the future.
