Kevin Kuczynski

Kelly Towns

The Lasallian Volunteers, as fully integrated members of the community, work side by side with the Brothers as tutors and teachers. Kevin Kuczynski, 2nd year LV, and Kelly Towns (both teach ESL to adults, tutor middle and high school students, provide field trips and service opportunities, and assist in all dimensions of the center)

The L.E.O. Center offers educational programs to middle school students in the afternoon, high school students in the evening, and adults in the evening and on Saturdays. Students in the after-school programs come to the Center for homework assistance and to participate in enrichment activities. Adults are offered classes in basic English, and computer skills. In the summer, the L.E.O. center offers enrichment classes to middle school populations.

The neighborhood surrounding the center and community has commercial activity along the major streets and mostly low-income families. It suffers from the usual urban ills of an impoverished neighborhood. 71% of the students’ families are designated as very low-income families by HUD criteria; 77% are African-American, 19% are Latino, 2% Asian and 2% Caucasian. The only cost to the students is a $25 membership fee paid quarterly by students in grades 6-12 and each semester by the adult students.
