Volunteers primarily focus on establishing academic programs to help the poorest and most unprepared students in the school. They also help with student activities, campus ministry, student leadership, service immersions, class moderating, and technology support. La Salle High School, Yakima La Salle High School of Yakima in Union Gap is a remarkable example of the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle being lived out in the Pacific Northwest. The only Catholic High School in the area, La Salle reaches out to one of the most culturally and economically diverse communities in the District of San Francisco. Many of the families of the rapidly growing Hispanic population are comprised of recent immigrants to the United States who are working in the fields of the Yakima Valley. La Salle is located on the border of the Yakama Tribal Nation. The native tribes of the West experience the most destitute of circumstances. Unemployment approaches 80% and alcoholism is rampant. While La Salle reaches out to all constituent groups, the school places special emphasis on the poor of the valley. 25% of students are from families below the federal poverty level.
