What do you do?
I am the 6th Grade Science Teacher and 5th Grade Reading Co-Teacher. I also assist in other areas of San Miguel in serving as the Technology Coordinator, Assistant Dance Coach, Scholar’s Club Coordinator and various other tasks.
Why did you choose to become a Lasallian Volunteer? Have your hopes about the Program been realized?
I chose to become a Lasallian Volunteer because I felt like it was something I was called to do. I have always considered volunteering after college and the Lasallian Volunteer program stood out to me during my undergraduate years. My hopes about the program have been realized because I am doing what I love to do and I am learning so much about myself and others along the way.
What is the most important “thing,” do you think, that your students/clients/guests need from you? What do you do to try to provide this?
I believe the most important thing I can give my students is encouragement. I encourage them to believe in themselves and their dreams for the future. I strive to be a resource that my students can turn to for guidance and support. I make myself available to each student on a regular basis if they need someone to listen to their stories or get help with their homework.
Have you noticed any signs of success in your work? What are they?
My sixth grade science class is very close to my heart. I have seen my students grow so much over the year and develop a love for science. I have seen enthusiasm for learning science and their desire to learn more. In seeing this zeal for learning, I realize I have been blessed to be able to touch their minds and hearts throughout this year. They have equally touched my mind and heart.
How has your involvement with the Brothers affected you?
My involvement with the Brothers has impacted me deeply. Being able to witness their commitment and dedication to their students is something I truly admire. Living in community has been a highlight of my year. I love the support and guidance from the Brothers that has become a daily part of my life. Being able to come home to people who care about you and the work you do and share stories and insight with is something that has helped me grow as a person. The Brothers have inspired me on so many levels. The Brothers are some of the most magnanimous and caring people I have ever met.
Why would you recommend the LV program to a college senior considering volunteering?
I would recommend the Lasallian Volunteer program because it provides so much support during your first year as a professional. The network of support you receive from fellow Lasallian Volunteers, the LV Office, LV alumni, and the Brothers is amazing. All of these people help you to succeed and give you encouragement when you need it.
Why would you recommend a contribution to the LV Program from a prospective donor?
The Lasallian Volunteer program is doing amazing things all across the country. The Lasallian Volunteers are serving students and clients who need caring, enthusiastic, and dedicated people in their lives. The Lasallian Volunteer program also transforms the lives of the volunteers while they are able to gain valuable experience in their community and service sites. With a program that does so much for everybody involved, it’s something that’s worth investing in.
